The start of breastfeeding is often full of questions, doubts … and sometimes tiredness too. Even though breastfeeding is natural, it does not always come instinctively. Many mothers run into difficulties in the very first weeks, often because of mistakes that are very common and, above all, avoidable.
The good news: there is a solution for every difficulty. Here are the most common mistakes at the start of breastfeeding and how to avoid them, so you can go through this experience more calmly.
1. Trying to stick to a strict schedule
❌ The mistake
Setting fixed times for feeds from the very first days.
✅ The solution
Breastfeeding works on the principle of supply and demand. The more often your baby feeds, the better your milk production adapts. That is why feeding on demand is recommended, especially in the first weeks, even when the feeds follow closely on from one another.
👉 Tip: frequent feeds are normal and important for getting your milk supply off to a good start.
2. A poor latch at the breast
❌ The mistake
Your baby takes only the nipple, which can lead to pain and soreness.
✅ The solution
A good latch means your baby takes a large part of the areola, not just the nipple. Their mouth should be wide open and their chin resting against the breast.
👉 If the pain continues, do not hesitate to reposition your baby or to ask a breastfeeding counsellor for advice.
3. Believing that pain is normal
❌ The mistake
Putting up with pain in the belief that it is simply part of breastfeeding.
✅ The solution
Breastfeeding should not be painful. Mild, passing discomfort can happen at the beginning, but strong or lasting pain is a warning sign.
👉 Sore nipples, a blocked duct or pain can be put right quickly with the right adjustments.
4. Not drinking enough or not eating a balanced diet
❌ The mistake
Neglecting your own food and fluid intake.
✅ The solution
Breastfeeding takes energy. Drinking regularly and eating a balanced diet helps keep your milk production going and prevents excessive tiredness.
👉 Listen to your body: thirst and hunger are often much stronger while you are breastfeeding.
5. Worrying too soon about how much milk you have
❌ The mistake
Thinking your baby is not getting enough because they feed often or seem unsettled.
✅ The solution
Breastfed babies feed frequently, which is completely normal. The signs that really matter are:
-
wet nappies
-
weight gain
-
your baby's general wellbeing
👉 If these signs look good, then your milk production is fine too.
6. Not asking for help
❌ The mistake
Facing the difficulties alone, for fear of being a burden or through a lack of confidence.
✅ The solution
Breastfeeding is something you learn. A midwife, a breastfeeding counsellor or other mothers can all be a great support.
👉 Asking for help is a sign of strength, not of weakness.
7. Comparing yourself with other mothers
❌ The mistake
Comparing your own breastfeeding with someone else's.
✅ The solution
Every mother and every baby is unique. There is no perfect model for breastfeeding.
👉 What matters is finding what works for you and your baby, with no pressure at all.
The early days of breastfeeding can be confusing, but with the right information and a little kindness towards yourself, it all becomes easier. Making mistakes is normal; what counts is noticing them and adjusting.
